Maywood Middle School recognized for fundraising effort
Students at Maywood Middle School raised 628,112 cents—or $6,281—in the Pennies for Patients campaign to benefit the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) this school year—more than any other school in Washington and Alaska that participated in the campaign for the first time. LLS coordinator Barb Wodzin personally presented a ”2006 Top New Fundraising School” plaque to Maywood students to celebrate their achievement.
A major factor in Maywood’s success was humanities teacher Meggan Atkins, who served as school coordinator for the campaign. “She provided an amazing community service experience for students, and her desire to teach children about the importance of helping others has given students an invaluable lesson on how they can make a difference,” Wodzin wrote in a congratulatory letter to the school.
