Dr. Pomeroy presents resource books to school counselors

pomeroy For students with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (AD/HD), sometimes even the simplest task like concentrating on reading a book can seem daunting. Luckily, the District's school counselors are experts in recognizing symptoms and signs, and now they have one more resource in their arsenal.

In honor of National Attention Deficit Disorder Awareness Day on Sept. 20, Dr. David Pomeroy, a local physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Disorders, donated to all 23 Issaquah schools a copy of the book "How to Reach and Teach Children with ADD/ADHD" by Sondra Rief.

Dr. Pomeroy said the book includes a variety of ideas for teachers to use to help children with AD/HD with subject-specific skills as well as life skills like organization and forming relationships.

Tasks that are easy for about 95-percent of the population are difficult if not impossible for the 5-percent or so of the population with AD/HD, according to Dr. Pomeroy.

"Teaching children with Attention Deficit Disorder is a particular challenge for any teacher," Dr. Pomeroy said. "The more up-to-date resources a teacher or counselor has at hand the better the student, teacher and class are going to move along with the education process."

Dr. Pomeroy personally delivered the books at a Districtwide counselors meeting; he also answered questions and talked with counselors about the AD/HD issues they encounter in schools.

"I wanted to bring an awareness of the scope of how AD/HD affects children, and also offer some solutions to school personnel who are faced with the challenges of helping these kids get the most out of their education," Dr. Pomeroy said.
