Construction projects
JUNE 2008 While the casual observer might not notice the extent of change occurring on the Issaquah High and Skyline campuses this summer–please rest assured that these projects are hopping ! The construction is still on track and on schedule and significant work will be done over break. Selective demolition will begin as soon as school is out. The top priority is foundational work such as moving teachers, shifting class space, adding portables, rewiring, reconfiguring some facilities, and adding walls and safety elements to ensure that the high schools are ready for students in September. The major contractors will use the summer time to form comprehensive work plans and complete shop drawings, do the underground utility work, order materials, and form work crews. The Capital Projects team will also begin reconfiguring the Issaquah Middle School bus loop this summer.
FEBRUARY 2008 The School Board has authorized construction and a timeline for a new 15th elementary on the Sammamish Plateau, approved by voters in 2006. The school, located near Pine Lake off Southeast 20th Street, is set to open in the fall of 2010. Please check back here by next school year for architectural plans and more information.
DECEMBER 2007 Break out the bulldozers! Because of the community's support of the 2006 bond measure, our growing student population will soon benefit from enlarged, modernized, and safer school buildings. Construction on two major projects, rebuilding Issaquah High and expanding Skyline High, will begin at the end of school in June 2008.
Classes will continue on the campuses as construction runs through fall 2009, when both schools will be ready to reclaim their freshmen to allow Pacific Cascade Freshman Campus to become a middle school. Additional construction will continue through 2010 at Issaquah High.
Issaquah High, complete rebuild
December 2007 Board presentation with conceptual drawings
- $74 million estimated construction costs.
- New enclosed design with three-story classroom wings.
- Expanded commons, gym, and other core facilities.
- Office at the front of the campus for safety.
- 600-seat performing arts facility available for community use.
- "Green" features such as capturing maximum daylight to reduce electrical lighting needs and creating rain gardens for water detention.
- Designs for construction phasing to minimize classroom impacts are still being finalized. The open campus configuration provides the opportunity to wall off construction areas from school functions.
Skyline High, expansion
December 2007 Board presentation with conceptual drawings
- $26 million estimated construction costs.
- New gym and expanded commons and core facilities.
- Three-story classroom wing with more science lab rooms.
- All administrative offices together at the front of the school for safety.
- Redesigned parking lot with better circulation, less congestion, and more spaces.
- Construction phasing is designed for minimal disruption to classes. The construction areas can be walled off from the rest of the campus, allowing school to continue as normal on the other side of the partition. Some portables will be needed to house students and staff at various times throughout the project. The school is working to maximize classroom utilization and reduce the need for portables.
