Features: The floor plan and building design is similar to Grand Ridge and reflects an increased emphasis on daylighting and natural ventilation strategies to reduce energy consumption. The exterior design and colors provide the new school with an individual identity. The 2-story building includes 28 classrooms, a computer lab, music room, multi-purpose room, gym and resource room with OT/PT room for special services. The classroom wings are organized around a central Library. There will be two covered play areas in addition to a typical elementary sand playfield.

- May 6
Site:
- Curb and sidewalks are being installed in the upper parking and bus loop.
- Irrigation piping has begun.
- The contractor is preparing to pave the parking and bus loop in May.
Building Exterior:
- All roofing is essentially complete except at entries.
- Metal siding is complete.
- Window installation is nearing completion.
Building Mechanical and Electrical:
- HVAC units are being installed with electrical and controls to follow.
- Boilers, pumps and chiller are on schedule for completion.
Building Interior:
- Sheetrock is nearing completion on entire project.
- Paint and vinyl wall covering is progressing with cabinet, ceiling grid following.
- Data and AV system wiring and speaker installation are ongoing.
Building finishes:
- Wainscot beginning soon, followed by wood trim and carpet.
- Flooring being installed in kitchen, followed by installation of kitchen equipment.
- April 6
Site:
- Curb and sidewalk grading and form work has begun.
- Irrigation work will begin soon followed by import of landscape soils and planting.
Building Exterior:
- Metal siding is nearing completion as is metal roofing. The flat panel rain shield in the Administration area is all that remains to complete the exterior sheathing.
- Built-up roofing is complete, with the exception of the final layer that will be installed later to avoid accidental damage by workmen.
- Windows are progressing; however, the contractor is staying on schedule and has covered the window opening with poly sheeting to allow interior work to proceed.
- Commons and Gym roof are nearing completion.
Building Mechanical and Electrical:
- o Rough plumbing is completed, HVAC equipment is being installed, ductwork is progressing, electrical rough-in is complete, electrical trim-out has begun and the project is now on permanent power.
Building Interior:
- Sheetrock is being hung in the Library.
- Paint and vinyl wall covering is on-going in the Administration and will be followed by windows, cabinetry and ceiling panels.
- Ceiling grid is being installed in classrooms and will be followed by HVAC, light fixtures, fans and other trim items.
Building finishes:
- Flooring bids have been received and are being reviewed.
- Furniture has been ordered.
- March 3
Site:
- The site has remained constant throughout the winter with the Consultants monitoring and reporting to the appropriate agencies as required and the Contractor maintaining the site accordingly.
- Irrigation work will begin within the month.
Building Exterior:
- Metal siding is continuing and flat panels around the Administration area is on-site scheduled to begin.
- Roofing is continuing in both metal and built-up as available.
- Windows are delayed due to manufacturing; however, the contractor is staying on schedule by covering opening with poly sheeting and the building has temporary heat.
- Final structural beams and trusses were set in place this week for the Commons and Gym roof.
Building Mechanical and Electrical:
- Rough plumbing is completed, HVAC equipment is being installed, ductwork is progressing into the admin area, electrical rough-in is keeping up nicely and conductors are being pulled in, sprinkler piping is being installed and tested.
Building Interior:
- Sheetrock in all classrooms is installed and in final stages of finish.
- Paint and vinyl wall covering is to begin this week.
- Administration area is nearly ready to sheetrock with roofing scheduled for this week.
- Classroom teaching wall cabinets are mocked-up and all cabinets will begin installation in two weeks.
Building finishes:
- District-furnished flooring finishes are out to bid.
- February 1, 2010
During the past two months, all building framing has been completed except for the installation of the inverted bow trusses and associated roofing that started this week. A majority of the metal roofing is installed and metal siding is progressing. Block work is complete. Installation of windows has begun so temporary heating units will be started up next week to provided shorter drying times for sheet rock mud and paint. Sheet rock and insulation are being installed and fire taped in critical areas for mechanical work. All HVAC units are loaded in the building and installation of units is progressing with plumbing and electrical to follow. Plumbing work, ductwork and fire sprinkler lines are being coordinated and installion is on schedule. Electrical box installation has been following the framing process and transformers and switch gear is located. Interior door frames have been installed where possible.
- December 10
The contractor continues to make good progress with the work. The north classroom wing is now dried in with
electrical rough-in nearly complete. Drywall is slated to start in the next week. Mechanical rough-in has begun.
The south classroom wing is framed and rough-in work has started. Steel floor framing is complete at the library
core of the building. Metal will go down in the next week with the concrete deck to follow. Hot mop and metal roofing
are proceeding to allow insulation and sheetrock in dry conditions. Roof beams for the commons and gym
are scheduled to arrive next week. Masonry work in these areas is complete and ready for the roof structure.
- November 4
The north classroom wing framing is nearly complete; the west classroom wing is 50% complete. HVAC duct work, plumbing and electrical conduits are being installed in the north wing. Block walls for the Gym and Commons are 75% completed. Steel for the central portion of the building including the library, administration offices and staff area will commence next week. Roof will begin on the north wing in two weeks. Due to the recent rains, the main detention pond is being pumped on a regular basis to maintain capacity. The temporary storm system is working as designed.
- October 14
The project is proceeding on schedule. The entire site including off site work is either complete or prepared for winter weather. Completed off-site work includes the water main extension and left turn pocket at 212th Street. The building is taking shape; the second floor of the North classroom wing and first floor of the West wing are being framed as the concrete block walls of the Gym, Commons and Kitchen are going up.
- September 9.
The project has proceeded at an accelerated pace, nearly meeting all September completion milestones; completion of onsite water main and sanitary sewer extension, storm sewer, retention ponds and installation of paving around the building and in the parking lot area. UIC (underground injection wells) are commencing this week. These wells will be connected next spring. The retaining walls are completed and backfilled. Building slabs will be complete this month and structural steel erection has begun in the North classroom wing. Hydroseeding of the slopes around the site and in the ponds is scheduled for completion by end of September as well; additional asphalt paving will be installed to protect the site from mud and keep the work on schedule.

Project site grading is nearing completion. Retention pond earth work is complete; next, inlet and control structures will be install followed by the pond liner and finally, the grass. Retaining walls at the building frontage are 75 percent complete and will be finished once the building retaining wall in poured and waterproofing installed. Rockery walls have begun and should be completed by mid-August. Sanitary sewer is underway, as is storm sewer and the main onsite water loop. Parking lot light bases are being constructed and ATB paving is on schedule for installation by September 1st. The building pad was completed on July 1st and footings for the north classroom wing were poured July 16th. Under-slab plumbing and electrical is being installed.
We are looking forward to many more weeks of dry weather to complete all site work and have ATB paving installed by September 1. The District site office is still without power; maybe next week.
- June 30.
Site work continues; the Contractor is making good progress due to the weather and the extended hours of work. Demolition of the house was completed today including decommissioning of the septic system. Mature plantings from around the house were relocated last week enhance the entry and provide some additional screening requested by the City. Grading of the upper parking lot is nearing completion and the bus loop road in taking shape. The General Contractor mobilized their site office and deliveries of plywood have begun. The retention pond retaining wall is being constructed and the pond earthwork should begin next week.
- June 23.
A ceremonial ground-breaking event was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 23. The entire community was invited!
- June 10.
A Notice of Intent to Award was issued to Babbitt Neuman Construction Company, Inc. on May 28, 2009. Once all contract documents have been completed and returned, the contractor will be issued a Notice to Proceed and work will begin immediately. Preconstruction meetings with the City of Sammamish have been completed.
- May 20. The bid opening has been moved to Tuesday, May 26. Additional information was required by OSPI prior to opening bids.
- May 13. The bid date has been changed to May 21st to accommodate OSPI requirements. Two addenda have been issued to date. The Department of Ecology has accepted the project and is writing a letter of approval to the School District. The City of Sammamish permits for the school, play structures, sound wall, CMU wall, fencing, flag pole and retaining walls are ready to issue.
- April 28. The bid opening has been moved to 5/12 to accommodate information submittals and authorizations required by OSPI as a portion of the project now qualifies for state construction funding.
- April 7. The E-15 bid documents are out to bid. Bids are expected to be opened on April 28th. The District anticipates receiving a building permit by May 1st
- March 31. The E-15 bid documents were completed and the advertisement for bids was issued on March 31st. A mandatory pre-bid meeting will be held on April 9th at 2:00PM and bids are currently due on April 28th. The engineers estimate for the construction contract is $16,000,000.
- March 11. Bid documents are expected to be complete in March and advertised for bids in April. Bids opening is planned for April 28.
- March 4. Design of the water and sewer system is complete and submitted for review and permits. City of Sammamish Building Dept. has published review comments and the design team is responding as this is written. The architect is finalizing bid documents.
- February 27. Robin Earl—currently principal of Challenger Elementary—is named E-15 Planning Principal effective in July.
- February 17. The Project Team met with city staff on Thursday the 12th to review the final CDSP submittal. The architect continues to prepare bid documents for the project. The city is reviewing project drawing for building permit.
- February 10. The design team continues to refine documents in preparation for public bidding. Design documents will be submitted this week to the Sammamish Water and Sewer District for approval of off-site water main construction.
- February 3. City building permit review continues. Re-submittal of CSDP drawings occurred 1/30/09. It is anticipated that permits will be issued mid-April 2009; this project will be publicly bid in March 2009.
- January 29. The city building permit review continues. Re-submittal of commercial site development permit drawings to address city comments is set for 1/30/09. Following resubmittal, indications are that the city will need 3-4 weeks to make their determination, a week to post the decision and 28 days for the appeal period before the CSDP process can be completed and a building permit issued.
- January 23: City of Sammamish is processing the commercial site development and building permits for the project.
