Finances

The Finance Department encompasses most aspects of school and district money management. These include budgeting, enrollment projections, accounting, payroll and benefits, accounts payable and receivable, purchasing, inventory control, and asset management. Construction is managed by the Capital Projects Department.

The school district manages many individual "businesses" within the educational system-a transportation business with a fleet of more than 100 buses, a food service business with more than 20 individual school restaurants–even a child care business with before and after educational programs for elementary students at the District's 14 elementary schools. Each of those and the other school-related finance systems operate with business models and systems designed to measure accountability and ensure legal and efficient use of public funds.

In July 2004, the School Board adopted a Policy Governance system that includes routine monitoring reports for all aspects of district operation. The Board reviews financial monitoring reports several times a year. These Finance Department reports outline compliance with legal requirements and the directives of the Board.
