Annual public hearing about proposed school district budget

Each winter and into the summer season, the district finance office prepares a budget for the upcoming school year.

Each summer, the School Board holds a public hearing about the planned budget. That meeting is usually held during the first board meeting of August, with action taken at the second August meeting in time for a board-approved budget to be sent to the Office of Public Instruction in Olympia by August 31.

Any person may attend this public hearing to speak on any aspect of the budget. Copies of the proposed budget are available to anyone by calling 425-837-7024. Board meeting dates are available on line or by calling 425.837.7002. Public notices about budget hearings are also printed annually in local newspapers.

Asbestos Notification

The EPA requires the Issaquah School District to notify the school community that asbestos building materials are present in some buildings. The District has taken steps to provide for safety of students, staff, and parents related to such materials. Asbestos building materials are safe when they are maintained in a stable condition. The District's asbestos management program has been in place since 1988 and consists of surveillance, inspections, response actions, records, and training for maintenance and custodial staff. Harassment/Intimidation/Bullying Statement

The Issaquah School District is committed to a safe and civil educational environment for all students that is free from harassment, intimidation or bullying. In order to ensure respect and prevent harm, it is a violation of District Policy 3207 for a student to be harassed, intimidated, or bullied by others in the school community, at school sponsored events, or when such actions create a substantial disruption to the educational process.

If your child feels he/she has been harassed or bullied, the incident(s) should be reported immediately to a teacher, counselor, or principal. Children bullied on the bus may report information to the Transportation Director.

The 2004 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires all school districts to locate, evaluate and provide services for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children between the ages of birth and 21, who may have a disability. If you are concerned about your infant, toddler or preschooler's development or if you have a school-age child or adolescent who is having learning or behavioral difficulties, call the school psychologist at your child's school or contact the Special Services Secretary at 425-837-7090.

Family Education Rights and Privacy Act

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. See complete FERPA details.

Free and Reduced Lunch Program

Children from households that meet Federal income guidelines are eligible for free or reduced price lunches. Reduced price meals cost each eligible student 40¢. To apply for free or reduced price meals the applicant must complete a District Application Form requesting free or reduced price lunches.

Return completed applications to your child's school office or to the Food Service Office. You may also mail your application to Issaquah School District Food Services, May Valley Service Center, 16430 SE May Valley Road, Renton, WA 98059.

Pest Management Pre-Notification

On rare occasions, the District uses chemicals to control weeds and insects, and those occasions are usually during times when school is not in session. Treated areas are clearly marked if pesticides/herbicides are used during school sessions.

If you need to know ahead of time that chemicals will be used at your school, please complete an Integrated Pest Management Pre-Notification Form available here or by calling the Facilities Services Department at (425) 837-5050. Send the completed form to our Maintenance Supervisor, 16430 SE May Valley Rd, Renton, WA 98059. Possession of Firearms

Possession of firearms on school property will result in a one year mandatory expulsion, subject to appeal with notification to parents and law enforcement. (RCW 28A.600.420)

Public Records Act

The District recognizes the importance of public records as the record of the acts of the District and the repository of such information. The public has the right under law to inspect and procure copies of such records with certain exceptions. The public records of the District shall mean any account, voucher or contract dealing with the receipt or disbursement of funds; with acquisition, use or disposal of services or of supplies, materials, equipment or other property; or with any minutes, orders or decisions fixing the personal or property rights, privileges, immunities, duties or obligations of any person or group. 

Puget Sound School Coalition

The Puget Sound School Coalition is a group of Puget Sound school districts that collaborates on issues such as land use, planning, impact fees, school construction, school funding, and other projects of mutual interest. Rights, Responsibilities, and Due Process in the Issaquah School District

It is the intent of the Board of Directors of the Issaquah School District that all students, teachers, administrators, and parents have access to and understanding of the state laws and regulations governing student rights, responsibilities and due process. This brochure presents these laws and regulations, along with a summation of district policy.

Sexual Harassment

It is the policy of the Issaquah School District that there be no discrimination against any student on the basis of sex. In keeping with that policy, the district will not tolerate sexual harassment of or by any of its employees, students, volunteers or parents. Sexual harassment is a violation of the district's rules of conduct for the work place and/or educational setting.

At a minimum sexual harassment recognition and prevention and the elements of this policy will be included in staff, student and regular volunteer orientation. This policy shall be posted in each district building in a place available to staff, students, parents, volunteers and visitors. The policy shall be reproduced in each student, staff, volunteer and parent handbook. See complete text of Policy 3213.

Standard Tort Claim Form

Washington state law (Chapter 4.92 RCW) requires a Standard Tort Claim Form to be submitted when filing a tort claim against the Issaquah School District. Standard Tort Claim forms cannot be submitted electronically (via e-mail or fax) but must be mailed or delivered to the address noted in the forms packet.

Surplus District Property

Three or four times each year, the district advertises the sale of "surplus" school equipment. This may include such items as worn or outdated computer monitors or CPU's, furniture, books, sporting equipment or musical instruments. These used items are offered for sale at used prices - first to students, other private or public schools, and non-profit organizations supporting young people, then to the public.

The district prints notifications of these sales, including date, time, and location in local newspapers and on the district website. More information about the sales is available at 425-837-7070.

Title I Schools: No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Request for Public Records

If you are a parent of a student at a school that receives Title I funds, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who instruct your child. Federal law allows you to ask for certain information about your child’s classroom teachers, and requires us to give you this information in a timely manner if you ask for it. Specifically, you have the right to ask for the following information about each of your child’s classroom teachers:

  • Whether the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has licensed or qualified the teacher for the grades and subjects he or she teaches.
  • Whether OSPI has decided that the teacher can teach in a classroom without being licensed or qualified under state regulations because of special circumstances that have caused OSPI to waive the licensing or qualification criteria.
  • The teacher’s college major; whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees.
  • Whether any teachers’ aides or similar paraprofessionals provide services to your child and, if they do, their qualifications.

Schools in the Issaquah School District that receive Title I funds for 2013-14 are: Apollo Elementary, Briarwood Elementary, Clark Elementary, Issaquah Valley Elementary, Maple Hills Elementary, and Sunset Elementary. Title I under the No Child Left Behind federal law distributes funding to schools with a high percentage of students from low-income families.
