In the Spotlight

Important people, programs, and events make up the daily operations of Issaquah schools. Sometimes they rise to the forefront in school newsletters, on the district homepage, and in the news. But many times they do not. “In the Spotlight” features the issues that continuously affect students’ education, even if they do not continuously make headlines. These people, programs, and events are timely, relevant, and significant—and deserve to be illuminated in the community.

Construction update
Break out the bulldozers! Because of the community's support of the 2006 bond measure, our growing student population will soon benefit from enlarged, modernized, and safer school buildings. Construction on two major projects, rebuilding Issaquah High and expanding Skyline High, will begin at the end of school in June 2008.

Funding lawsuit
In September 2004, twelve school districts joined together as an alliance to file a lawsuit against the state for failing to adequately fund special education programs. The suit comes after extensive discussions with the Washington State Legislature to resolve the problem. The problem has not been resolved. It continues to grow.

High School: Visioning and Meaningful Diploma
What skills and knowledge do Issaquah School District graduates need for the modern world, and what strategies will our high schools use to prepare every student? The Issaquah School District is exploring these key questions, and exciting change is underway.

Issaquah Schools Foundation
Issaquah Schools Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to providing for unmet program needs in the Issaquah School District. ISF raises dollars from public and corporate supporters and awards those dollars to worthy student and school programs.

New Issaquah School District website timeline
A new Issaquah School District website is on its way! Although much of the foundational work is done behind the scenes, you can follow along with the timeline for development as we get close to the switch from the old to the new site at the end of the school year. The new website will have an updated, common-sense approach to navigation that incorporates feedback from focus groups and data about how people use the current website. Also, look for a link on the current homepage soon that will allow you to explore the new site even as content is being shifted over and fine tuned. After the new site is complete, we will focus on improved web pages for all of our schools next school year, which will include common navigation bars. Our goal is for District and school websites to further connect families to the educational process through information that is relevant, timely, abundant, and easy to find.

Night Academy
Night Academy is a program that gives students opportunities to retrieve high school credit for classes they have failed during the school year. Any high school student who needs to retrieve credit to ensure timely graduation from high school is encouraged to consider this option.

Summer school
Elementary Summer School is open to students who are below or just meeting standards in reading and math.

Middle school summer school is open to students who have a counselor recommendation for the program and who need credit retrieval (grades 6-8) in core classes.

High school summer school is open to students with counselor recommendation. Summer school is for students who have failed a course. Students who have received a “C-” or need a higher grade to fulfill a pre-requisite requirement may also enroll for grade replacement.
