Subject: WASL information, school names, art calendar... and more

·        Aiming High on its way to schools in February… This annual publication by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is designed to help parents understand state learning standards and their connection to WASL.  OSPI is sending enough copies for schools to share with families of every student scheduled to take WASL this year.  You can download Aiming High from the web or wait until your student brings one home.  Spanish versions will be available on line when those are completed by OSPI.

·        Questions and answers about WASL…are among the growing cache of WASL and testing information on the district website.  You can start with the Graduation Requirements link on the home page at www.issaquah.wednet.edu.

·        To learn more about WASL and the Stanford 10 test in person...Monday, March 6 or Thursday, March 9 at 7 pm.  WASL is now required for grades 3-8 and 10, and it's optional for grades 9, 11, and 12. Dates and testing are different this year, and the potential impact on graduation (beginning with the class of 2008) is something all students and parents should understand. All students in grades K-11 will take the Stanford 10 in math and reading.   March 6 and 9 meetings take place in the Administration Center Board Room, 565 NW Holly Street, Issaquah, WA 98027.

·        E-14 still needs an official name.  The School Board narrowed the possibilities to two (Greenway Elementary and Grand Ridge Elementary).  They ask for your comments by 9 a.m. Friday, February 3 – in time for their decision at the February 8 Board meeting.

·        If you know someone with a student who will enter kindergarten next year, forward this link to information about next year’s Kindergarten information – including how to register for next year and a special invitation to the annual summer Kindergarten Bus Ride.

·        February is Open Enrollment Month.  In February the Issaquah School District will accept applications from students who wish to transfer between buildings within the district or who want to transfer to Issaquah from another district.  See the details about how to apply and which schools are open for transfer options.

·        Want to know more about school math?  Become a volunteer for Maywood Middle School’s February  All School Math.  You’ll learn what today’s middle school math students are experiencing in their classes, and you’ll help with an all-school math scoring event on February 8, 9, and 10.  To learn more, contact volunteer coordinator Susan Canaga at sssk-canaga@msn.com.

·        You got the latest issue of FOCUS in the mail this month.  Read the Superintendent’s message, and expanded stories and get links to more in-depth information about the topics covered in print by going to FOCUS ON LINE.

·        Did you know that the Issaquah Schools Foundation publishes the annual school art calendar?  The full-color showcase of student art and events was cut from the district budget three years ago.  The Foundation stepped forward to save this most visible demonstration of K-12 art.  The calendar ad space generates funds for the Foundation – making it possible to award more grants for school programs.  It’s a beautiful relationship!  Learn how to include your business ad in the calendar from the ad spec’s available on the Foundation website.

·        Speaking of the art calendar, all current students of the Issaquah School District are invited to submit art to be considered for the 2006-2007 issue.  Art must be submitted by Wednesday, April 19, 2006 following specific criteria.

·        To help you plan ahead, the 2006-2007 school calendar is published on the website.  See schedules for the first and last day of school and mid year breaks.
