Subject: District news this week & volunteer opportunities

·        Bond and Levy Scope Committee finished its work on Wednesday.  Board meeting on October 12 is the next step toward finalizing February 7, 2006 bond and levy ballot.

 

·        The Boundary Advisory Committee has sent its report and recommendations to Superintendent Barry.  Their #1 recommendation is Option 4 which incorporates some boundary changes.  Their #2 choice is Option 3, and the committee recommends that Options 1 and 2 be dropped from consideration. 

 

·        Issaquah substitute teachers are being readied for math and science assignments.

 

·        Volunteers are needed for the District Nutrition Procedures Committee.   The committee will meet this fall through February and then twice each year thereafter.   Six community slots are available.  Contact christensenc@issaquah.wednet.edu for full details or to submit your name for consideration.

 

·        Listen to News Radio 710 KIRO Tom Douglas Seattle Kitchen show on Saturday, October 8.  Tune in between 4 and 7 pm for an interview with Lisa Phillips, instructor of Liberty High School Culinary Arts program, and a former LHS student.

 

·        Check out the October 12 issue of the Issaquah Press to see the Katrina Relief work being done by Issaquah School District students.

 

·        Parents, learn about the dangerous “choking game” some students are playing.  This and other student health information is available on the district website.  Click on “current health issues.”

 

·        The District Career and Technical Education department has 5 opportunities for you to volunteer.  See them below.  To volunteer, or for more information contact Linda Corr, ISD CTE Director, at 425-837-7045 or corrL@issaquah.wednet.edu.

 

1.      Volunteers for the Program Advisory Committees listed below; meet 3-4 times a year.  Purposes: advise, assist, and provide support and advocacy.  The committees provide ongoing evaluation and consultation about the curriculum to keep it current with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values identified as being necessary for students to work effectively in their chosen occupations.          

 

·          American Sign Language

·          Automotive Tech

·          Business and Marketing

·          Construction

·          Criminal Justice

·          Environmental Systems

·          Family and Consumer Science Education

·          Culinary Arts

·          Graphic Design and Multimedia

·          Sports Medicine

·          Computer Programming

·          TV Production

 

2.      Serving on the General Advisory Council (GAC); meets 4 times per year. Other members will include a representative from each of the program areas listed above.  The charge of this Council is to support and strengthen the partnership between business, labor, the community, and education.  They are the “big picture” group; they develop long-term goals and objectives of the District’s career and technical education.

 

3.      Mentors for DECA students (Liberty, Issaquah, and Skyline).

·          Individuals willing to spend 10-20 hours (over a 5-6 month period) working with written papers and presentations. Much of this can be done through email correspondence, attaching the paper, and editing at convenience for thoughts, ideas, feasibility and grammar.

·          Individuals willing to spend 5-10 hours (over a 5-6 month period) in role-play and case study events. Give sample role-plays and conduct ten- to fifteen-minute role plays with students, after which the mentor will assess on competencies outlined in role-play lesson.

·          Individuals willing to speak in classrooms.

 

4.      Culminating Project assistance:

·          10th grade—each student is required to complete a 3-6 hour job shadow/interview experience

·          12th grade—panels for the student’s exit interviews (January and June).  First opportunity will be 2007-2008.

 

5.      Teacher Internships

·          At no cost to you, host a teacher for a week in your business.  Career and Technical Education teachers are required to gain additional experience in one of the jobs or careers in their teaching area at least once every five years.
