Subject: Drug-resistant staph infection, catch a criminal, graduation date , and more ...

*        Should you be worried about MRSA (a drug-resistant staph infection)? You've seen this "super bug" in the news recently, but Public Health Seattle & King County wants you to know that MRSA-although an important health problem-is not any more serious or rampant now than in other years. "The news media's recent focus on the most dramatic cases of MRSA does not accurately reflect the spectrum of illness from the bacteria," according to Public Health Seattle & King County. "Most illnesses caused by MRSA are treatable skin infections that heal with proper wound care."  Issaquah schools and our school nurses are following all recommended procedures for staph prevention, and parents should, too. More information-including a MRSA Q&A and fact sheet-is online.

*        The School Board meets at 7 p.m. tomorrow, November 7, at the Administration Building to talk with our high school career specialists about the support systems in place for seniors applying to colleges and universities, among other agenda topics. The complete agenda is online.

*        Watch this clip of security video to see if you can help identify burglars who broke into Pine Lake Middle School last week. In the past month, burglars have stolen computers, wiring, and audio-visual equipment from both Pine Lake and Beaver Lake Middle School. Police and school staff are determined to track down the criminals.

*        The day seniors have been waiting for since kindergarten is set: Graduation ceremonies for our three comprehensive high schools will take place Thursday, June 12, at SafeCo Field in Seattle. Issaquah High is at 2 p.m., Liberty High is at 5 p.m., and Skyline High is at 8 p.m.

·        Congratulations to Beaver Lake Middle School science teacher Kathy Boudreau-Stroud who has been honored with a KCTS Golden Apple Award!

·        School Snapshots: Endeavour Elementary shows what it really means to bring a storybook to life!

·        Some of our local municipalities have declared Nov. 10-18 AIDS Awareness Week, and many of our schools are joining the effort. You can, too. All citizens are invited to attend a free interactive AIDS Experience exhibit from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Nov. 10-18, at Pine Lake Covenant Church, 1715 228th Ave. S.E., Sammamish. The Exhibit transports participants to a hut in the heart of African for a new perspective on the AIDS pandemic. Call 425-392-8636 to make a group reservation or get more information. Volunteers are also needed from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, to help Echo Glen students assemble kits for caregivers who support families suffering from AIDS in Zambia. Contact Susan Evans, s-evans@comcast.net, to sign up.
