Subject: Meatpacking processes investigated by USDA; beef removed from school menus pending more information

Dear families,

You may have heard in media reports that beef products supplied statewide to school districts by Westland Meat Company are potentially tainted. No meat from that company has been shown to pose a health risk, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investigating reports that Westland has been using illegal meatpacking processes.

The state this morning initially reported that our District has not received any beef products from Westland; however, to be absolutely certain, our food suppliers are tracking back shipments and will let us know as soon as they can confirm our situation with 100-percent confidence.

While it is important to note that we are not aware of any immediate health risk, we are taking precautions to be as safe as possible. School menus for the following week are being changed to remove all options with beef.  We hope to have the revised menus posted online later today. We have chosen to address this one week at a time, and we will revise the menu as we receive updates on the status of the beef from the USDA.

The safety and health of our students is always of the utmost importance, and we want families to feel assured that we are taking all steps necessary to ensure their children receive healthy, nutritious, and safe meal options. We will keep you updated as we receive more information.

Thank you.
