Subject: 06-07 elementary bell times, math resources on line, Nutrition committee meeting March 1

·        Mid winter break reminder.  School will not be in session during the annual February break, Monday through Friday, February 20-24.  Classes resume on Monday, February 27.

·        06-07 elementary bell times. Some bell times for elementary schools change next year. No changes anticipated for middle and high schools.

·        Online math resources for middle school parents include a general parent guide for parents wanting to help students with Mathematics in Context – the materials used in middle school math classes.  Middle school math teachers have given each student instructions to share with parents.  If your student hasn’t shared that information with you, contact your middle school math teacher.

Even those without middle school math students can get a look at what materials are available by going to the Holt OnLine Learning Website.  Enter the user name iparent1 and the password v5j8.  Because you are not looking at work of an actual student, the information available is not as rich as it will be for parents.  The site is a work in progress – both the Holt publishers and district staff welcome your thoughts about how the on-line site can be enriched to help parents support student learning.

Voter approval of the Capital levy on February 7 provided another four years of funding that makes it possible to give students access to technology skills necessary for their futures.  And voter reauthorization of the levy enables links to resources such as the Holt OnLine Learning Website and on line math resources for elementary and high school parents.

·         “Poor nutrition affects children’s health and their ability to learn.  Schools are places that should model and reinforce healthy eating behaviors.  The District will provide healthy eating choices with the following procedures.”

Those are the opening lines of the DRAFT nutrition procedures written by the District’s Nutrition Procedures Committee.  The committee, formed in September 2005, is charged with providing input into the implementation of the District’s Nutrition and Wellness Policy.

On Wednesday, March 1 at 7 pm, the committee invites you to a public meeting at the administrative service center to introduce their draft materials.  They invite your comments on their work so far.

·        Grand Ridge Elementary is the name of the school previously referred to as “E-14.”  Opening in the Highlands community in September 2006, the school for students in kindergarten through 5th grade will be home for approximately 600 students.

Authorized by voters in a construction bond approved in 1999, the elementary school has been noted for its “green” construction.  It is also alleviating overcrowding in other plateau elementary schools.

The school board approved boundary changes for plateau region elementary schools that will be in place for the next three to four years until construction of the District’s 15th elementary school and 5th middle school are complete.  Both of those construction projects were approved by voters with a 67% majority in the February 7, 2006 election
