Subject: Superintendent search update; District summer school programs; and parent seminars

·         The School Board has reposted the superintendent position opening after the first round of the search did not yield a candidate who had the right skill set, experience, and passion for the District to be a perfect match. Search firm Ray & Associates will alert the Board to strong candidates as they apply.

“We already made a decision that none of the applicants so far have been the right person for us,” Board Member Brian Deagle explained at Wednesday’s business meeting. “I’m not looking for a fine candidate. I’m looking for the finest.”

·         Now enrolling: The Elementary Summer School Program—which runs from July 9 to August 3 at Clark Elementary—is open to students who are below or just meeting standards in reading and math. Instruction is tailored closely to the needs of each child. A summer Video Editing class is available for this year’s 4th and 5th grade students. Registration forms are online.

Information about summer programs for middle- and high-school students is also available on the District website, as are application materials for the programs.

·         Don’t miss two upcoming parent education opportunities. The Internet Safety Seminar is 7 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Liberty High School, 16655 S.E. 136th, Renton. Parents will leave with a packet of resources to help keep their children safe online. Topics will include: MySpace, Internet lingo, blogs, instant messaging (IM), and more. “Coping with Adolescent Stress and Depression,” with presenter Sue Eastgard from the Youth Suicide Prevention Program, is 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at the Administration Building, 565 N.W. Holly St. Parents will learn how to recognize signs of depression in teens and how to get help.
