Subject: 10th-grade WASL scores, outstanding staff, theater grant, and mor e ...

*        Sophomores will be mailed home their WASL scores by June 14. Beginning with their class-the class of 2008-every student is required to pass the reading, writing, and math sections of the 10th-grade WASL as a graduation requirement. Any 10th-grader who did not pass this year's test will receive information along with their score sheet next week outlining next steps. All other grade-levels will receive their WASL scores in the fall.

*        The Issaquah school community has proven its commitment to students once again. The Calling for Kids Phone-a-thon-put on by the Issaquah Schools Foundation/Community in Schools of Issaquah (ISF/CISI) on May 22, 23, and 24-raised more than $60,000. The money will directly benefit students by purchasing things such as graphing calculators, science equipment, and reading-enhancement books. It is not too late to make a contribution.

*        Elementary parents: don't miss the opportunity to give input on report cards. A group next year will begin to look at revising the current report card, and your thoughts are a critical part of the process. The online survey is open through 4 p.m. Monday, June 12.

·        All fifth-grade students should have received a letter on blue paper this week informing them of the math placement process for next year. If you have any questions call math curriculum specialist Leslie Nielson, 837-7051. The district's math Web site has a new tool to help parents view various math paths their student can take from fifth-grade through graduation.

*        Congratulations to this year's Chain of Achievement and Catalyst winners who were honored on Wednesday night. These district awards recognize staff members who have been nominated by their peers for constantly going above and beyond in their efforts to make sure every student is learning well. A complete list of this year's winners and past winners is on the district Web site.

*        Are you ready for your close up? Any student or staff member can apply for an Issaquah Youth Theatre Foundation (IYTF) grant to fund projects that encourage schools to build or enhance theatre arts opportunities. The deadline is Friday, Sept. 29, and projects must be completed by Aug. 31, 2007. E-mail IYTFoundation@hotmail.com or call 425-392-3571 for an application or more information.

*        Children of all ages and their families are invited to participate in the free Eighth-Annual Chalk Art Fest on Tuesday, July 25, from noon until 5 p.m. at the Issaquah Community Center, 301 Rainier Blvd. S. Participants are assigned their own sidewalk space to draw whatever they choose. Chalk, water, and prizes will be provided by the Issaquah Arts Commission. Prizes will be awarded in different age groups at 6 p.m. prior to the Concert on the Green.

*        The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra presents "Anchors Aweigh!" at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at the Eastlake Performing Arts Center, 400 228th Ave. N.E.  Several talented women from our district will perform:

§         Marianna Vail, orchestra teacher at Beaver Lake Middle School and Skyline High School, violin

§         Leslie Nielsen, math curriculum specialist, cello

§         Annelise Nielsen, ninth-grader at Pacific Cascade Freshman Campus, cello
