STEP - Student Transition Education Plan
STEP is the Issaquah School District curriculum which encompasses both the High School and Beyond plan and the Culminating Project.
Required works for STEP will be stored in a portfolio kept in the Career Center. Each year there will be a progress grade of
Satisfactory or
Unsatisfactory on the student's report card.
In each grade level, students focus on one question:
Grade 9: Who am I?
Students will assess and analyze their interests and skills as they relate to career and college planning. They will explore careers based on their interests and develop a High School and Beyond Plan. Students will be introduced to the Career Center resources for career and college planning. Students will compile information in a resume organizer and write a Reflective Letter which will address how their present and future courses and activities will prepare them to pursue their goals.
Resources Grade 9 student materials
Grade 10: Where am I going?
Students will contact a business to request a job shadow in their identified careers of interest. Prior to that experience students will learn about employability skills as they relate to the world of work-being prepared, dressing appropriately and professionally, good attendance, being polite and respectful, asking thoughtful questions, interview techniques, and writing a resume and thank-you letter. Students will update their resumes and High School and Beyond Plans; they will write a Reflective Letter about their job shadow experience and how it relates to their future plans.
Resources Grade 10 student materials
Grade 11: How do I get there?
Students will research their post-high school education options including university, college, technical, military, and apprenticeship opportunities. They will explore employment data, such as the occupational outlook, salaries, and education and training requirements. Required works will include a letter of application to a college or employer, an updated resume, an updated High School and Beyond Plan and another Reflective Letter.
Grade 12: How can I show what I know?
Students will finalize their resumes and High School and Beyond Plans and write their 12th Grade Reflective Letter. They will learn presentation skills as they prepare for an exit interview with a panel made up of community and staff members. Culminating Project portfolios should reflect who they are, their high school experience, and future goals. Each presentation will be as individual and unique as the student!
