Lightning Readers win the Regional Global Reading Challenge!

Update March 23, 2012

On March 23, the Lightning Readers won the entire King County Global Reading Challenge! Each of the regional champions offered fierce competition, but the Lightning Readers impressively answered 25 out of 30 tricky and detailed questions, which gave them the narrow victory. The King County Library Services director confirmed that this is the first time an Issaquah school has won the Grand Challenge.

The team has been training since October and prepared for the final challenge by practicing during lunches and recesses. Their hard work and dedication paid off!

UNSTOPPABLE! That is the best way to describe the fourth-graders on Grand Ridge’s The Lightning Readers, who on March 15 won the King County Library Regional Global Reading Challenge! To get to the regional level, The Lightning Readers successfully vied against six other teams in their school then four other teams in the district. At the Regional Championships, they answered more questions correctly than the other two Bellevue and Mercer Island teams. Even though the questions became notably more difficult at each level, The Lightning Readers missed only four out of 72 total questions during all three challenges—no easy task!

The King County Global Reading Challenge is a battle-of-the-books style competition that has teams of fourth- and fifth-graders correctly answer questions about 10 pre-selected books, chosen by librarians to represent a wide range of reading levels and interests. Challenge questions (multiple choice, open ended, true/false, and fill in the blank) are based on specific and factual information in these books. The overall goals are to promote a love of reading, foster teamwork, and introduce children to a wide variety of literature and multicultural reading materials.

What’s next for The Lightning Readers? It’s on to the Grand Challenge on March 23, where the team will represent the East Region against the North, South, and West champions of King County.

Congratulations and good luck to The Lightning Readers: Eric Hong, Emma Huryn, Collin Mitzel, Gargi Panatula, Astha Soni, Tyana Strait, Brandon Wu, and Anna Zhang.
