Healthy schools produce healthy students. Healthy schools and school districts are those that support good nutrition and physical activity as part of a total learning environment.

Nutrition Education
Recent state legislation requires school districts to develop wellness policies and to set goals for nutrition education, physical activity, food service, and other school-based activities designed to promote student wellness. In addition, districts must involve a broad group of individuals in policy development and to have a plan for measuring success.

The Issaquah School District recently adopted a new nutrition policy and has taken steps to increase the nutritional value of school lunches. The District will establish guidelines for foods and beverages sold by the food service program and those sold in vending machines, snack bars, school stores, and school-sponsored fundraising events. Students will have opportunities for physical activity and appropriate exercise and accurate information on nutrition and wellness will be available.

A Nutrition Procedures Committee of students, parents, and staff began their work in November to evaluate the district's current nutrition guidelines, suggest improvements, and guide the District's adoption of its new nutrition policy. They met regularly between November 2005 and February 2006, and will meet twice each school year.

Free and Reduced Lunch Program
Children from households that meet Federal income guidelines are eligible for free or reduced price lunches. Reduced price meals cost each eligible student 40¢. To apply for free or reduced price meals the applicant must complete a District Application Form requesting free or reduced price lunches.

Return completed applications to your child's school office or to the Food Service Office. You may also mail your application to Issaquah School District Food Services, May Valley Service Center, 16430 SE May Valley Road, Renton, WA 98059.
