District DECA students enjoy national success
Seven Skyline students returned home with huge accolades after DECA’s International Career Development Conference April 29-May 2 in Dallas. DECA is a co-curricular that offers education and training to students who want to pursue careers in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. The Skyline crew seems to have learned those lessons well, judging from their awards:
- Patrick Horton, Nicholas Jones, and Christopher Vollmer won third-place in Advertising Campaign
- Kelly Moore placed in the top 10 in Apparel and Accessories Management.
- Patrick Cannon placed in the top 10 in E-Commerce Business Plan.
- Jessica Caeser and Alexandra Kenyon placed in the top 10 for General Marketing Research.
Also, Brett Petersen from Liberty High School received second-place in the 7-Up Web Ad Design competition.
Over 14,000 high school students, advisors and sponsors participated in the 60th annual event, including 43 students from Skyline (led by B.J. Sherman and Stephania Lemeshko), four students from Issaquah High (led by Bob Payseno), and four from Liberty (led by Chris Gapinski). The individual competitions—which students must qualify for during state conferences—consist of a written test, followed by role-playing scenarios in which students must demonstrate certain marketing proficiencies before a panel of judges from the business community. Competition is the focus of the DECA year, providing students a chance to test their skills in several academic areas.
