Issaquah High School juniors Sarah Bonebright, Christine Jurevicius, Cory Tarilton, and Alexander Whan have been selected at Washington Aerospace Scholars for 2007-08. They are among 225 juniors from across the state who will now begin studying an online NASA-designed curriculum to learn the history of space exploration, the space shuttle, the International Space Station, the moon, and Mars. The Scholars will complete 10 lessons online between now and May, submitting quizzes, math solutions, essays, and graphics. They will also independently select a topic of interest and complete a final essay project.
Based on this work, 160 students will be selected for a six-day summer residency experience at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. There, teams will cooperatively plan a mock human mission to Mars with support from professional engineers, scientists, university students, and certificated teachers. Each session also includes briefings from aerospace professionals, tours of engineering facilities, and hands-on engineering challenges involving model rocketry, robotics, and landing devices.
The Washington Aerospace Scholars program emphasizes science, technology, engineering and math, and encourages students to consider careers in these fields.
