Skyline's Team A took second place behind the perennial chess powerhouse, Garfield High School. Other top finishers from the area included Bainbridge Island High School in third place, and Mercer Island High School in fourth place.
To qualify for the state tournament, teams must finish in the top half of their league. Skyline is in the very competitive KingCo League and qualified two teams for the tournament. Only two other high schools qualified more than one team. Skyline also brought two JV chess players for the parallel Junior Varsity competition.
In the first round, Skyline had only one loss and one draw across all twelve team chess boards. In one round the team had a double sweep; both Team A and Team B won all ten of their games! After the first four rounds of the five match tournament, Skyline had three undefeated players, Alan Yu, Daryl Hansen and Brent Williams.
In the junior varsity section, Brent Williams won JV First Place Individual honors after a tense series of speed chess play-offs to resolve a three-way tie. Completely surrounded by three rows of spectators, Brent battled into the lead and emerged in first place.
