SHS soph's radio interview makes job shadow memorable

Jim Valley, news anchor for KIRO News Radio recently hosted Skyline sophomore Jay Farber's job shadow experience, an element of the District's new STEP curriculum. On job shadow day, Mr. Valley was planning a story about careers today's high school students pursue, and asked Skyline Career Center specialist Karen Edgar to help him arrange interviews with other Skyline students about how their career paths differ from those their parents chose over a decade ago. jobshadow

Ms. Edgar set up the interviews and described what happened next. "Jay and Mr. Valley met with a great group of students representing diverse interests – business, communications, physical therapy and emergency medicine. Jay received some valuable "real world" experience when he personally conducted one of the mini-interviews scheduled to air the following day on KIRO Radio 710." She added, "Jay's 'hands-on' job shadow experience gave him some excellent insight into the life of a radio news reporter."

Director of Career and Technical Education Linda Corr explains job shadowing this way: "These experiences give our students valuable opportunities to explore careers, observe the real-world aspects of business, and reflect on their own goals. By collaborating with our local business community, we can offer students experiences that the classroom cannot provide."
