District teams win sports medicine victories
Teams of students from Issaquah, Liberty, and Skyline High showed off their skill and smarts at the 2008 Washington Vocational Sports Medicine Association Symposium and Competition in Wenatchee on April 25 and 26. Pitted against some of the most talented teams and more than 500 of the best sports medicine students in the nation, Issaquah students shined:
- Issaquah’s sports medicine team, led by teacher Todd Parsons, placed fifth overall—the school’s fifth year straight of finishing in the top five! Six of the eight varsity members placed in the top 40. Varsity team members included: Shannon Harrison, Jared Warren, Justin Lim, Branden Porte, Stephanie Whitney, Britney Boyer, Michelle Sandsmark, and Erin Nicol.
- Liberty’s sports medicine team, led by teacher Larry Brown, placed ninth overall. Team members included (in the order of their scores): Amanda Bard, Zachary Ishimitsu, Andrew Kraft, Nichole Newbury, Kelsey Were, Alexander Woehlbrandt, Justin Noonan, and Jordan Warlick.
- Skyline’s sports medicine team, led by teacher Cheryl Reed, made a strong showing at the state competition. Varsity team members included: Jackie Hite, Toni Scarcello, Jordan Faires, Blake Mills, Jaron Kent-Dobias, Shelby Hoek, and Heather Chesnut.
The competition is made up of a skills demonstration and a written assessment created by the National Athletic Training Association.
The District’s sports medicine programs give students the opportunity to explore a variety of healthcare careers, learn fundamental medical terminology and practices, and get real-world practice helping student athletes in their school’s athletic training room.
