Tech Prep

What is Tech Prep?

IHS_FoodsTech Prep is a national Career and Technical Education administered by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education. Washington State's Tech Prep program is managed through the State Board of Community and Technical Colleges in partnership with the Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Local community and technical colleges along with neighboring school districts have developed consortiums to:

  • facilitate students' transition into postsecondary education and beyond by providing students with an early college experience and the ability to earn tuition-free college credits while completing their high school requirements.
  • create entry points for students into challenging and rewarding programs at local community and technical colleges as they prepare for their career or next level of education.
  • align curriculums between high schools and community and technical colleges to define a pathway for students interested in a particular career.

What does this mean for students in Issaquah?

SHS_TVThe Issaquah School District is part of two consortia: the College Credit and Careers Network and South King County Tech Prep Consortium. We are also partners with the Seattle Central Community College. These community relationships enable us to align many of our CTE courses with community and technical college classes and give our students opportunities to earn college credit—free of charge—while taking courses in high school. They maximize resource sharing, flexibility, and local control to best address regional needs.
