2021 ELPA21 Assessment : March 22 – June 4, 2021

For families of students learning English (ELL):

Between March 22nd and June 4th 2021 all eligible students will be taking the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA21). This annual test provides information on your student’s progress in acquiring English in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The ELPA21 also helps to inform the school’s decision about what kind of ELL services your student needs. More information is available through OSPI here.

All eligible hybrid ELL students will be taking this test in small groups or one-to-one during the school day with a teacher. All COVID safety protocols will be followed.

All eligible remote ELL students are invited to take the ELPA21. The district strongly encourages students to take this assessment in order to ensure proper placement next year. To schedule a testing time, please use the scheduling option in the email received from your student’s ELL teacher.

Families will need to complete the COVID attestations on the day of testing. Your school will provide the attestations needed.

  • The students will be met at the school entrance, at the time you scheduled (please make a note and show up at the time you choose). An attestation will be taken or verified on arrival and a temperature will be taken by school staff. The student will need to pass the attestation verification to be admitted for testing.
  • Families will need to be prepared to wait in the car until the student has completed the assessment and is ready to leave the site with the family. We will not have supervision for students outside of the testing time. This is an untimed test. Your school will communicate with you if testing requires more than one test date/appointment.

We ask that you schedule doctor and dental appointments outside of the testing window and that your student arrives to school on time for the school day (hybrid students) or testing appointment time (remote students).

When the scores for the ELPA21 are released, you will receive a letter with your student’s profile outlining his/her overall proficiency in English as well as the individual scores for speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Resources for families:

Students may bring the following items with them (that they can self-manage) on the day of their test to help them manage the testing process: Personal snacks/water bottle/books/fidgets.

Thank you for working with us to ensure your student’s success.

Sincerely,

Issaquah ELL Department Staff
