Meals Update: Shortages Create Challenges for Food Service Teams

School lunches continue to be served in our cafeterias at no cost to students. However, due to nationwide food supply chain disruptions, staffing shortages, and other pandemic- related challenges, our Food Service teams continue to have limited resources.

At times we have been unable to provide the expected amount and variety of meals to all students. We apologize for any inconvenience or difficulty this may cause.

If it is possible for your family, please consider sending your student with a lunch from home, to ensure that no one has to go without lunch.  Our ultimate goal is to provide a lunch to every student who wants one.

District Food Service staff members receive about 60 to 70 percent of items ordered on any given delivery day. Team members are working diligently to find substitutions, and are able to do so some of the time, but at other times, the substituted products are not arriving as expected, either, said Brian Olson, Director of Food Service.

Meals are available to all students, regardless of income or other factors. In addition to the no-cost lunch option, a la carte items (such as bottled drinks, pizza from vendors, or bags of chips), will be available at middle schools and high schools for students to purchase.

Our staff comply with all state and county health and safety requirements for food preparation, including the use of masks and other personal protective equipment and handwashing. Students will be required to wash or sanitize hands before eating.

Also, please apply for free and reduced meals if you think you may qualify, even though meals will be provided at no charge to all students this year. Families that qualify may be eligible for additional benefits. Eligibility is based on several factors, including family income level. Apply online here
