College Application Topics: Cumulative GPA

Ø  Your cumulative grade point average (GPA) is based on the mathematical average of the designated numeric value of each semester course letter grade for all of your high school credit classes.  You can find your cumulative GPA by looking at the cumulative summary at the bottom of your transcript.  This number is used in most college applications.

Ø  Letter Grade to Point Value table:

 Grade Mark Point Value A 4.0 A- 3.7 B+ 3.3 B 3.0 B- 2.7 C+ 2.3 C 2.0 C- 1.7 D+ 1.3 D 1.0 F 0.0

Ø  Marks excluded from GPA calculation are: Satisfactory/Pass/Unsatisfactory

Ø  GPA is computed using a weighted averaging method using the following steps

o    Step 1 – determine course length, GPA credit value, and Grade Mark

o    Step 2 – calculate semester GPA credit by taking GPA credit for the course and dividing it by the semester meets (how many semesters offered of the class to make a full year course)

o    Step 3 – Multiply the semester GPA credit by the Grade Mark value to get the semester points

o    Step 4 – Total up semester GPA credit and total up semester points

o    Step 5 – Divide semester points total by semester GPA credit total to get GPA value

o    Semester point value = (GPA credit/semester meets = semester GPA credit) x grade mark value

o    Grade point average = total semester point values divided by total GPA semester credits

Example of GPA calculations for a student:

 Course Grade Length GPA credit Semester meets Semester GPA credit Grade Mark Value Semester Points Band A- Year 1.00 /2 = 0.50 x 3.70 1.85 Communications B+ Year 1.00 /2 = 0.50 x 3.30 1.65 Math B+ Year 1.00 /2 = 0.50 x 3.30 1.65 Physical Ed B+ Term 0.25 /1 = 0.25 x 3.30 0.83 Reading B Semester 0.50 /1 = 0.50 x 3.00 1.50 Science A- Year 1.00 /2 = 0.50 x 3.70 1.85 Social Studies B Year 1.00 /2 = 0.50 x 3.00 1.50 Totals: 3.25 10.83

Total of semester points = 10.83, total of semester GPA credits = 3.25, GPA is 10.83/3.25 = 3.33 (B+)
