Maywood Middle School Students Participate in Hour of Code!

CTE Computer Science Discoveries students at Maywood Middle School participated in the Hour of Code! Students who completed the hour were awarded a “Certificate of Completion” to show their accomplishment in learning more about coding. CTE teacher, Anisa Zareh-Mohazzab, shared some of the fun examples students created during Computer Science Education week:

  • Dance Party 1
  • Dance Party 2
  • Dance Party 3

Computer Science concepts, including computational thinking, are skills students can utilize in nearly any subject.

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code," to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide.

CTE Month Highlight: Fashion Design - Knitted Scarves

Fashion Design, a CTE course at Liberty High School, thrived in spite of distance learning this past semester! During the semester students were not able to sew the normal projects however, kits were sent home and they were able to create knitted scarves for the Fabrics and Weaving unit. Students also had an opportunity to hear from four Fashion Designers in the Industry.

The Fashion Design and Merchandising course at Liberty is taught by CTE teacher, Donna Abbey.

CTE Month Highlight: American Sign Language Program

Did you know that American Sign Language (ASL) is a CTE program? Students prepare for potential careers in ASL Interpreting. ASL Honor Society and ASL level 3 students at Issaquah High School traditionally perform an interpretation of the National Anthem during the assembly for Veteran's Day. However, with the pandemic, the performance was practiced and recorded via Zoom. https://youtu.be/CU1QcDq5-Ws

The ASL Honor Society has also collaborated with DECA (an association of marketing students) to teach them how to sign their slogan, “We Mean Business.” That video can be seen here: https://youtu.be/7r6cDNuatQ0

The ASL program at Issaquah High School is led by CTE teachers Paige Friedli and RJ Harris. The DECA program is led by CTE teacher Andrew Shanafelt.
