Second Grade Scope & Sequence

Third Trimester

Diagnostic Assessments

Assessments designed to help the teachers identify student proficiency in pre-requisite skills and to plan differentiated instruction.

  • Reading Foundational Skills: Teachers may use ongoing progress to assess student learning needs in reading foundational skills
  • Reading Comprehension: Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment. Teachers will administer a 1:1 reading comprehension assessment.

In the third Trimester, reading instruction will focus on the following:

Informational & Literary Text

  • Asking and answering who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding
  • Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe
  • Describe how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.
  • Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

  • Phonics, syllables, affixes, spelling patterns

Writer’s Workshop

Trimester 3 will focus on writing opinion pieces, introducing a topic or book, stating an opinion with supporting reasons & using transitions and concluding statement. Students will write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events. They will also use digital tools to produce and publish their writing; as well as grammar and conventions.


In trimester 3, second grade students will study the Amplify Science units Plant and Animal Relationships, as well as Changing Landforms.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL will focus on establishing relationships and a supportive class community, including learning in the following areas:

  • Establishing a Safe, Secure, and Structured Environment
  • Learning and Following Classroom Norms and Expectations
  • Empathy
  • Emotion Management
    • Identifying and Responding to Emotions
    • Strategies for Emotion Regulation
  • Problem Solving

In Math, core instruction during the third trimester will focus on using place value to add and subtract, measurement, beginning understanding of fractions by partitioning shapes into equal shares. Students will also focus on telling and writing time from both analog and digital clocks.
