Third Grade Scope & Sequence

Third Trimester

Assessments

Assessments designed to help the teachers identify student proficiency in pre-requisite skills and to plan differentiated instruction.

  • Reading Foundational Skills: Teachers will use ongoing progress to assess student learning needs in reading foundational skills
  • Reading Comprehension: Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment. Teachers will administer a 1:1 reading comprehension assessment.

Reading

In the third Trimester, reading instruction will focus on the following:

Informational & Literary Texts

  • Answering questions and using text features to locate information
  • Main idea, with key details
  • Recount stories including fables, folktales and myths
  • Parts of a story
  • Point of view

Lexia, iReady & Word Study

  • Individualized Learning

Foundational Skills

  • Phonics, syllables, affixes, spelling patterns
  • Fluency

Writer’s Workshop

Trimester 3 will focus on opinion writing & supporting point of view. Students will also conduct short research project, gathering information from print and digital sources and note taking skills. For narrative writing students will develop real or imagined experiences or events which include descriptive details and clear sequences of events. Students continue learning grammar skills and conventions.

Science

In trimester 3, third grade students will study the Amplify Science units Inheritance and Traits and Environments and Survival.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL will focus on establishing relationships and a supportive class community, including learning in the following areas:

  • Establishing a Safe, Secure, and Structured Environment
  • Learning and Following Classroom Norms and Expectations
  • Empathy
  • Emotion Management
    • Identifying and Responding to Emotions
    • Strategies for Emotion Regulation

Math

In Math, core instruction during the third trimester will focus on understanding of fractions as numbers, how to represent and interpret data. They will continue to build on their multiplication and division fluency skills.
