Fifth Grade Scope & Sequence

Third Trimester


Assessments designed to help the teachers identify student proficiency in pre-requisite skills and to plan differentiated instruction.

  • Reading Foundational Skills: Teachers will use ongoing progress to assess student learning needs in reading foundational skills
  • Reading Comprehension: Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment. Teachers will administer a 1:1 reading comprehension assessment for qualifying students
  • Math: iReady Diagnostic. Learn more about the iReady Math Diagnostic Assessment here.


In the third Trimester, reading instruction will focus on the following:

Informational Text 

  • Using quotes, drawing inferences
  • Main idea and key details
  • Summarizing
  • Comparing and contrasting overall structure, events, ideas and concepts between two or more texts

Lexia, iReady & Word Study

  • Individualized Learning

Foundational Skills

  • Syllables, affixes, spelling patterns
  • Fluency

Writer’s Workshop

Trimester 3 will focus on writing opinion pieces with supporting reasons and information. Students will also write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events. Students will continue to build on their development and organizational skills as well as grammar and conventions.


In trimester 2, fifth grade students will begin the Amplify Science units Patterns of Earth and Sky and The Earth System .

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL will focus on establishing relationships and a supportive class community, including learning in the following areas:

  • Establishing a Safe, Secure, and Structured Environment
  • Learning and Following Classroom Norms and Expectations
  • Empathy
  • Emotion Management
    • Identifying and Responding to Emotions
    • Strategies for Emotion Regulation
  • Problem Solving
    • Problem Resolution
    • Peer Relationships and Social Skills for Success


In Math, core instruction during the second trimester will focus on operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to the hundredths place. Students will extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions. Students will also study geometric measurement and volume.
