Issaquah School District Moving Forward with Property Acquisition for Middle School #6!

At a special meeting held on Tuesday, December 4, the Issaquah School Board authorized the purchase of approximately nine acres of property located at the entrance of the Talus community in Issaquah for a new middle school. Originally, the District had planned to build a sixth middle school on the current site of its administration building in downtown Issaquah.

However, the Talus property is a superior location, given its current urban village zoning, location right off State Route 900, and easy bus access. From this location, the District may transport students from the south end of the District, alleviating overcrowding at Maywood Middle School, with less likelihood of increasing traffic in the downtown Issaquah corridor. The new middle school is scheduled to open in September 2021 and the District will retain the downtown Issaquah property for future use.

In addition to the Talus property, in June 2018 the District acquired 13 acres located on the Issaquah-Pine Lake road in Sammamish for elementary #16 to be completed in September of 2020. The District is hopeful that the 40-acre Providence Heights property will soon become available for purchase and become the site of the District’s fourth comprehensive high school and elementary #17. The District is currently renovating the office building it acquired at 5150 East Lake Sammamish Parkway and expects to move its central office operations into that building in spring 2019.

Background: Voters in the Issaquah School District approved a $533M school bond in April 2016 to purchase land and build two new elementary schools, a new middle school, and a new comprehensive high school as well as expand and remodel four additional schools.
