Posted on June 25, 2021

The Issaquah School Board held a regular meeting Thursday, June 24 at the Issaquah School District Administration Building. The meeting was broadcast live on the ISD YouTube channel, and a recording of the meeting is available.

The following is a summary of the topics the Board and district staff discussed and action the Board took at the meeting. It is not an official record or meeting minutes. To review official minutes from all board meetings, please visit our board meeting archive webpage.

Update on 2021-22 School Year

Superintendent Thiele shared an update in regards to Summer School 2021 as well as future planning for a full time return to in-person learning this coming fall. As a reminder, the Academic and Well-being Recovery Plan, which has the objective of guiding our student learning recovery, is posted on the District website.

Thiele continued by sharing a Human Resources update on recalls of reduction in force. In addition, he announced staffing changes in our Special Services department with Dr. Dana Bailey named as our new Assistant Superintendent of Special Services and Sharine Carver as our new Executive Director of Special Services. Continue to listen to Thiele’s planning updates for 2021-22 on YouTube.

Discussion on Memorandum of Understanding

The School Board discussed procedures and their role around Memorandum of Understanding’s (MOU’s), the agreements the District has in place with our various labor groups. Noted during the discussion, as a Policy Governance board any move in the direction of requiring Board approval on all agreements should be a part of a policy. School Board Director Sydne Mullings added that she also believes there should be a participatory role of the Board in developing the required components of agreements, not just the approval of them. After much deliberation and discussion, the original motion was modified to specify Board approval of MOU’s and Letters of Agreement (LOA's) with impact to the standard in-person school day for the 2021-2022 school year.

Superintendent’s Annual Evaluation and Contract Action

The Board shared the Annual Summative Evaluation on the performance of Superintendent Thiele. This evaluation is based on data collected over the course of the 2020-21 school year from the monitoring of Ends and Executive Limitations policies. Members of the Board took turns sharing written conclusions from the evaluation, followed by comments from Superintendent Thiele. The Board made no contract modifications as a result of the evaluation.

Works in Progress

Superintendent Thiele shared a status report of various projects and activities in the District including:

  • Appreciation for the Before and After School Care program staff as they provided critical, in-person childcare from the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 to present.
  • Recognition of the Teaching and Learning Department's work on the Elementary Literacy adoption, especially as it relates to improving our instruction and support for students with Dyslexia
  • Currently reviewing the Student Resource Officer (SRO) program for future direction
