2019 Lunar New Year Celebrations Kick Off in the ISD

2019 Lunar New Year Celebrations Kick Off in the ISD

Posted by Elizabeth Egan on 6 February, 2019

This past Saturday, the City of Sammamish, Skyline High School Chinese Classes, and other six local organizations co-organized the 2019 Lunar New Year celebration at Sammamish Campus of Central Washington University. Superintendent Ron Thiele joined everyone at the opening ceremony to watch the lion dance and to extend his Lunar New Year greetings.

The ceremony was followed by performances and educational booths featuring Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese cultures. This big event drew more than 2,500 people, including student volunteers from Skyline High School and Liberty High School. This year, the ISD’s Family Partnership Team, along with people from the Issaquah School Foundation’s Cultural Bridges Program also had an information booth to allow our diverse families to ask questions and better understand how to navigate the school system.

The ISD is home to a vibrant American Asian population. Lunar New Year celebrations will be taking place in schools throughout the District, providing a wonderful opportunity for all to celebrate the diversity in our schools.
