Author and Illustrator Dana Sullivan visits Sunset Elementary

Posted by Elizabeth Egan on 6 April, 2018

On March 2, in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America week, author and illustrator Dana Sullivan visited Sunset Elementary. He presented to Ms. Bland and Mrs. Nelson’s 1st grade classes, as well as Mrs. Larson’s 3rd grade class. Sullivan began his presentation with information about himself, so the students could get to know him a little better, and showed them via PowerPoint the different books he has written and illustrated. Popular titles include the Bob Books series (illustration), the Digger and Daisy series (illustration), and Ozzie and the Art Contest (both author and illustrator).

After introducing himself, Sullivan read his newest book, which came out in February, My Red Velvet Cape. The story is about a boy named Mateo and his birthday. Readers follow Mateo through his birthday as he waits eagerly and excitedly for his birthday party that afternoon. A very special gift should be coming from his grandmother – a red velvet cape!

The students loved the story, and afterwards Sullivan demonstrated how he illustrates his books by drawing a boy and dog on a large notepad for all to see. Students whose parents had dropped off a personal copy of one of Sullivan’s books at the library before the presentation began were able to get Sullivan’s autograph as well.

This is the second time Dana Sullivan has visited Sunset Elementary, his first visit being March 2014.
