Liberty’s Bethany Locke Organizes Book Drive to Help Support ISF Pre-K Summer School Program

Posted by Elizabeth Egan on 25 August, 2017
Over 120 students who attended the Issaquah Schools Foundation Pre-K summer school program this summer were treated to the gift of being able to take home additional books of their own thanks to Liberty High School senior, Bethany Locke.

Locke, who is working towards getting the Girls Scouts Gold Award, decided to organize a children’s book drive during the 2016-17 school year to help give students access to books at home. Her passion comes from a lifelong love of reading that she endeavors to share and pass on to others. Initially Locke’s plan began as a way to support her local community, with an overall goal of bringing in 250 books during the book drive. However, thanks to her efforts as well as extreme support from her peers, it quickly evolved into a program that could support the whole district – bringing in a total of 300 books.

Guided by Issaquah Schools Foundation VOICE mentor Susan Gierke, Locke connected with Nancy Young, Director of Early Learning at the close of her book drive to help direct the books where they were most needed. In the end, all of the books were donated to ISF’s Pre-K summer school program, and sent home with the individual students when the program ended in early August. Each book donated is marked with a special tag on the inside front cover so students can write their name and see in years to come that these books came from this special program.

Thank you Bethany for all you have done to support these young readers!
