Maywood Hosts Parent Night for ELL Families

Maywood Hosts Parent Night for ELL Families

Posted by Elizabeth Egan on 12 December, 2017
At the end of November, Maywood Middle School hosted an ELL (English Language Learners) Parent Night. The event aimed to welcome Maywood families who have a child receiving ELL services or recently received ELL services and exited the program. This smaller forum allowed staff to better communicate and answer questions on how the school and families can best partner for their student’s success.

To kick off the event Principal Erin McKee opened with a welcome, followed by a presentation by Christina Demmert, Maywood’s ELL teacher. Afterwards parents were encouraged to visit booths representing different subject areas and programs including Skyward help, translated resources for core subjects, Counseling question and answer, bilingual library books and suggestion box, after school homework help, and transportation, as well as further information about the ELL program.

Twenty-five parents attended the Information Night, which was held in the school library. Small children who came along were entertained by Maywood ASB officers with a coloring and clay activity station so parents could spend as much time as needed at each booth. The event was organized by Ms. Demmert along with Joanne Husemoen, a support paraeducator, with the help of 12 other teachers and staff members.

Parents who attended were encouraged to consider participating in the “What Every Parent Wants to Know About the Issaquah School District” event happening on February 1st at 6:30pm. The event is being held at Issaquah Valley Elementary and is hosted by the ISD’s Equity and Family Engagement Team.
