Newcastle Students Test Their Geography Knowledge in National Geographic Bee

Posted by User Not Found on 2 February, 2016

As the ten National Geographic Bee finalists sat with their white boards and markers in hand, Newcastle Elementary School students filed into the gymnasium to watch their fellow classmates test their geography knowledge. Throughout the competition, Principal Mellish emceed the event asking questions such as “Western Canada's most populous metropolitan area has a large number of Chinese immigrants. Name this city.” Judges Wendy Kirchner, Newcastle Community Activity Liaison, and Rob Wyman, Newcastle City Manager, recorded and timed student answers throughout the competition.

After multiple rounds of questions and a slow elimination of students, the Newcastle National Geographic Bee championship round came down to Thomas Dawson and Vincent Diesch. In the end, it was Vincent who earned the title of school champion and was awarded a $75 Amazon gift card, a geography bee pennant flag, and a geography bee water bottle. As the second place winner, Thomas was awarded a $25 Amazon gift card and a geography bee water bottle.

Vincent will now take an online test provided by the National Geographic Society in an attempt to qualify for the state competition this spring.

Congratulations to all of the Newcastle geography bee finalists who competed on stage in the PTSA sponsored National Geographic Bee: Zach B, Maury C, Thomas D, Vincent D, Ethan J, Hana K, Matisse M, Mirabelle W, Mia W, and Jensen W.
