The sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Math Club members of Pine Lake Middle School recently achieved great success at the Washington State Math Championship 2016 in Blaine, WA. Throughout the day-long event, students challenged their mathematical knowledge in individual and team competitions, including an individual math test, mental math, sections of probability, algebra, and geometry, and a variety challenge that included math from all previous categories.

The sixth grade math team of Victor Cheng, Ilinca Hagiu, Shivani Modi, and Sanya Tamhane placed third and the seventh grade team of Daniel Hong, Jason Kim, Laasya Nagareddy, and Aparna Krishnan placed second in the competition. Individual students were also awarded for their mathematical abilities. Daniel Hong won fifth place out of all of the seventh grade competitors and Karthik Sellakumaran Latha won ninth place out of all eighth grade competitors.

Maggie Chen, Pine Lake Math Club Volunteer shared, “Our students had a wonderful time and we hope these sorts of events will prompt more and more students in the study and interest of advanced mathematics.”
