Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program, by hosting a luncheon at CenturyLink Field that honored the 16 Puget Sound-area teachers who had been recognized for educational excellence during the 2015 NFL season. Among the honorees was Beaver Lake Middle School teacher Tasha Kirby.

Tasha was recognized by the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program last September with a school-wide assembly, where she received a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. She was nominated by Jayashree Krishnamurthy, who wrote:

“I am the parent of a second grader in Challenger Elementary, which is one of the feeder schools to Beaver Lake Middle School, where Tasha Kirby teaches. Mrs. Kirby is very dedicated about spreading science awareness and was instrumental in helping me bring a science program called Destination Imagination to Challenger. The program was being conducted in the other feeder elementary schools. Mrs. Kirby and her husband came to Challenger one evening after her Beaver Lake Middle School work day ended, and she gave a presentation to Challenger parents about the Destination Imagination (DI) program. We now have six DI teams at Challenger, and it is all due to Mrs. Kirby’s efforts. I am impressed by her dedication and commitment to spreading the joy of science to students everywhere.”

Along with the surprise assembly and check, Tasha received tickets to the Seahawks home game on October 5 against the Detroit Lions and was acknowledged during an on-field presentation at CenturyLink Field.

During the luncheon at Century Link, Beaver Lake Middle School Principal Stacy Cho joined Tasha. Following the reception Tasha, Stacy and the other honorees were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium, which included a stop in the Seahawks locker room, where each teacher discovered a personalized locker. Inside each locker was a copy of the Seattle Times ad honoring them, a commemorative 2015 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom booklet and Seahawks items. Seattle Seahawk DeShawn Shead (#35) made a surprise appearance and signed autographs, posed for photos, and shared his Super Bowl XLVIII ring with each teacher.
